Abstract

Relapsing polychondritis (RP) is an uncommon and severe episodic inflammatory disorder involving cartilaginous structures, predominantly those of the ears, nose, and the laryngotracheobronchial tree. Other manifestations include scleritis, sensorineural hearing loss, polyarthritis, cardiac abnormalities, skin lesions, and glomerulonephritis. Approximately 25% to 35% of patients with RP have a concurrent autoimmune disease. Vasculitis is the most frequent condition associated with RP, affecting approximately 18% of patients. Relapsing polychondritis with ankylosing spondylitis is quite rare; only 2% of relapsing polychondritis associated with autoimmune disease is accompanied by ankylosing spondylitis. This report presents a rare case of relapsing polychondritis concurrent with ankylosing spondylitis.(Korean J Med 72:S354-S358, 2007)
